Summer Time Learning

We are almost finished with our 2nd week of summer vacation.  Last week we just relaxed and didn't do much of anything.  This week we started our schooling.  3 months off they lose a lot and I'm trying to prevent that.  Its not much, just math, journal writing, and reading.  Oh and the science journal, but that's a normal everyday thing.

For the girls....
The girls started multiplication at the end of the year, so we are working on those math facts, and making our own extra large multiplication chart.  Once I find my connector, I'll upload pictures of it.

We bought large posterboards, and the mini post-its.  Then we drew the grid, 0 - 12.

Right now it only has the 0s, 1s, and 2s, filled out.  Then once we've mastered those facts, we will add 3s and 4s, and so on.

This not only gives them something visual to see (which is important for the auditory processing disorder) but its also something they make themselves.  We did the same for the 1-100 number grid.

Their journal writing, I bought them each a 5 subject notebook.  1 section is for their journal writing, one is for their stories, and another is for their topic writing.  We went through their Great Big Book of Everything and made a list of things they want to learn more about.  Then on Monday they each  chose an index card and spent the week learning more about that animal, and writing notes in their notebooks.  Then on Fridays they will write a few paragraphs about that animal.

Their teacher for next year sent home a summer reading list.  So we've been working on that list when we go to the library.

For the boy...
With him we are working on pre-algebra/algebra, writing, and reading.  He has the same sort of writing set up for the girls, but more advanced, and his is put more into a report than just a few paragraphs.

With the math, he has 1 assignment a day from the book, and then an equation timed test.

Last year was the first normal summer break for my kids.  Having gone to a year round school before, they always only had 1 month off at a time, and during that month off, they had off track homework.  So last year I came up with summer break homework, and again this year.
